Many Hindu devotees visit this holy place from all over India and abroad. It is one of the oldest temples in the city where Ma Kamakhya is worshipped.
What is the Kamakhya temple famous for?
Kamakhya is one of the most sacred ‘Shaktipeeth’ in India, where the parts of Sati fell. The temple is believed to have her womb.
When her husband Lord Shiva was disrespected at her paternal home Sati immolated herself. Lord Shiva carried Sati on his shoulder and started the tandav dance creating havoc.
Seeing the havoc, Lord Vishnu cut Sati’s body with his Sudarshan chakra. Sati’s body fell at different places of India creating Shakti peethas. A part of her womb fell here in Kamakhya.
There are four chambers in the Kamakhya temple, a Garba griha (sanctum sanctorum) which is a cave under the ground level where you will not find an idol of Kamakhya to worship but yoni ( vagina). This is the main part of the temple.
And there are three outdoor halls known as Calantha, Pancha Ratna, and Nata Mandira.
Devotees offer prayers and wish to Ma kamakhya. They come back to her again after their wishes are fulfilled. Devotees believe that every wish to Ma fulfills if pray with sincere heart.

Is one day enough for Kamakhya Darshan?
Yes, one day is enough for Kamakhya darshan. Plan your trip carefully so that you will have enough time for the visit. Start early to avoid the rush. Kamakhya temple is always crowded with devotees. There will be a long queue for the darshan.
These days you have to stand in another queue to obtain the coupon after screening the covid vaccination certificate.
Despite being rushed and crowded we managed to come out from the beautiful darshan of Ma kamakhya before 9.30 am. We were in the queue just for half an hour. We were the luckiest to have her darshan so early and so beautifully.
Here are the details of how we manage to make a quick but best visit to Ma Kamkhya.
My experience with Ma kamkhya Darshan
This was my third visit to Kamakhya temple. Finally, in my third visit, I could see very nicely the place where Ma’s secret parts- where her yoni is kept.
I got a little more time to immerse my hand in the water, pay my respect and gratitude for a little longer this time. I could see the place next to Ma Sati, the idol of Ma Laxmi and Ma Saraswati which I did not notice in my previous visit.
My first visit to Ma kamakhya was in the year 2015 with my husband and daughter. We were in Guwahati for my cousin’s marriage. We took an opportunity to visit Ma kamakhya.
Without Ma’s darshan, your visit to Guwahati is incomplete.
We reached the temple late the queue is the same as we have today. I stood in a line with other devotees but that would have taken a whole day.
My sisters and mom went by VIP ticket which cost 501/ per person. We were three so paying 1500/ is quite a lot for me at that time.
I came out of the line with a heavy heart. I prayed from my heart to call me again for the darshan.
My second visit was in the year 2018 when I visited with my daughter and my friend. We went early and stood in a long queue. We had a whole day for the darshan so stood in a line patiently praying in my heart. I felt to get Ma’s darshan is not easy so one must pay our time for the blessings.
This time too I could not offer VIP tickets for the fast darshan. It almost took 4 hours to reach the main temple. During this time while standing in the line I wished for my daughter to clear her interview as an Assistant professor and after fulfilling my prayers I will again visit ma Kamakhya.
My third visit on 5th March 2022 was to offer my gratitude to Ma Kamkhya for fulfilling my wish. My daughter got the job just next year of my visit to Ma Kamakhya. I could not visit her due to the Pandemic.
I took time for the darshan but this was the best darshan. And I know that this is best due to my previous visit. My previous visits were making me ready for this wonderful experience this time.
I am financially secure now so without hesitation we took a panda(priest) and got our VIP tickets for the visit. With a VIP ticket, you get a chance to move your line faster. There are gates in every 5/6 meters queue. There are three lines, one for VIP and two for the general public.
The gate opens one by one. VIPs line is generally shorter so VIP ticket holders can get a chance to reach the main temple early.
We stood in a line just for half an hour. We could have the best experience inside. The priest offered our prayers and if you are with the priest you will get extra attention from the other priest. We got a little longer time to touch ma.
We could see the other two idols of Ma Laxmi and Ma Saraswati. We touched them and offered our prayers. We stood there a little longer. Most of the time and also I heard from the other visitors that the priest drives the devotees as soon as they reach theirs. They do not get time to pray.
It was not the same with us this time. The priest gave us the holy water from the pond. The experience was blissful.
Have faith your prayer will be answered. Ma is very kind. She is showering her blessings to us every moment. We have to be ready for the blessings. We have to prepare for our prayers to get answered.
Only praying and wishing will not manifest Ma’a blessings, but we must be the truest and best version of ourself and be capable of receiving blessings from Ma.
In these long years from 2015 to 2022, I have gone through many positive changes in my life. The lack of abundance, challenges of life trained me to become the best version of myself.
I will always remain grateful to Ma Kamakhya for this transformation. I will visit her whenever I get a chance to meet her.
May Ma Kamakhya bless you.
