This August 2025 marked the 10th year since my husband passed away. I have a daughter—she is my everything: my friend, my anchor in life, and my inspiration. She works in Kolkata, so she’s away from home most of the time.
I live alone happily with my two pet dogs. Living alone is both incredibly rewarding and uniquely challenging. But I can truly say: I am alone, but not lonely. I enjoy every moment of my day, and there is never a dull moment in my life.
My relatives and friends often ask me if I get bored when I stay alone. My answer is always:
“I don’t get time to be bored.”
And that’s the truth. My days pass beautifully, filled with household chores, tending to my small garden, caring for my fur babies, and, most importantly, taking care of myself.
Today, I’d like to share my personal experiences of living alone—and living alone happily. I want to show you how living alone can be a time of growth, strength, and deep reward. How it can make you resilient, courageous, and fulfilled.
Living alone is not that hard—if you follow a few simple tips. With the right mindset and approach, it can be one of the most enriching phases of your life.

How to Live Alone Happily?
If you’re not happy with yourself, then it will be just as hard—if not harder—to live with friends, family, or a partner. Happiness doesn’t come from others—not from your spouse, your children, or your relatives.
Happiness is an inside job. If you are truly content within yourself, it won’t matter whether you’re alone or surrounded by people.
I’ve been living alone happily for the past 10 years, and I’m enjoying every bit of it. I actually started writing this post last week, but I kept getting caught up in my routine.
I’ve realised that I tend to get so involved with my household chores and gardening that I often stray from my writing schedule. But that’s okay—it only means I’m fully engaged with life.
And today, I made up my mind: I’m going to finish this post and stick to my morning routine!
No matter how much we try to be punctual or organised, life sometimes pulls us in different directions. That’s not necessarily a bad thing—often, we return to our plans with renewed energy and motivation.
The important thing is: even when you’re living alone, if you find yourself constantly busy and engaged, it means you’re not bored or lonely. You’re living a full life.
In this post, I want to share 30+ rewarding tips for living alone happily. If you’re someone navigating life on your own and looking to make it peaceful, purposeful, and joyful—you’re in the right place.
I truly believe these tips can be helpful for you, just as they have been for me.
30 Tips for Women Who Live Alone
1. Follow Routines
My life changed when I established a morning and evening routine and started sticking to it. I still struggle sometimes, but I always come back to it when I get off track.
Following a routine gives you the satisfaction of completing your chores. It keeps you focused and helps maintain a balanced mind. It also engages your time in productive ways.
When living alone, there’s no external control—so it’s easy to fall into unproductive habits. These habits can drain your energy and leave you feeling uninspired.
If you want to live a happy and productive life, following a self-care routine can be incredibly helpful.
2. Morning Routine
Here are sets of morning routines you can try to make your life satisfied and happy.
3. Wake Up Early
Use your mornings for personal growth and positivity. Wake up a little earlier than usual—this small act sends a message to the universe that you’re ready to improve your life.
4. Screen-Free Morning
Avoid reaching for your phone first thing in the morning. Scrolling right after waking up floods your mind with non-essential information.
Instead, give yourself time to grow. You’ll be with your phone all day anyway—why not try a mobile-free morning, just for a while, and see how it transforms your alone time?
5. Mindful Morning
Start your day with mindfulness. Do every task with full awareness. This simple practice leads to self-discovery.
Even the tiniest actions—like brushing your teeth or sipping tea—can bring joy when done mindfully.
One of the best things about living alone is the peace. You’re not disturbed by anyone—only your own thoughts. Happiness comes when you stop disturbing yourself.
6. Journaling
Make it a habit to write about your feelings, your daily activities, or simply express gratitude. You can jot down anything. For me, journaling is the best way to relax my mind.
Living alone and facing daily challenges can be overwhelming. You hear judgmental remarks, unsolicited advice, and rudeness from others.
As a widow, I have often experienced manipulation or exclusion. I used to feel bad about it, but now I’m used to it—and it no longer bothers me.
My daughter takes care of my finances and other responsibilities, so I feel I shouldn’t have to beg for what is rightfully mine.
I believe in the power of this vast Universe—it has always given me the best, and I trust it will continue to do so.
Journaling helps me navigate my emotions, intentions, and daily chores.
Every morning, after reading, I pour my heart into my journal. It is my best friend. I share everything with it—it makes me feel light and happy.
It’s a must-have habit for anyone living alone—especially if you want to live alone happily.
7. Mindful Tea
Living with awareness is a beautiful way to experience life. But our surroundings are often noisy and distracting, and it’s easy to get swept up in them.
Morning is the best time to look inward. Starting your day with mindful tea is a simple yet powerful practice.
Just sip your tea mindfully. Hold your cup and know that you are holding a cup. When sipping, be aware that you are sipping tea. Be present.
It may seem like a small act, but it’s incredibly meaningful.
When you live on autopilot, you miss the beauty of the moment. But when you bring mindfulness to your actions—even the simplest ones—they become sources of joy.
Start with your tea, and soon mindfulness will touch every part of your life.
8. Make Reading a Habit
Books are the best companions when living alone. Choose ones that support your personal growth. Keep a motivational book for your morning reading.
When you cultivate the habit of reading, you’re never truly alone. It feels like the author is right there with you—offering wisdom and encouragement.
Every morning, during my ritual, I feel like the author of my book has come over for tea to keep me company.
Believe me—reading will add more and more joy to your life. I am reading Atomic Habits by James Clear.
9. Offer Prayers
Offering prayers to the one you believe in is a beautiful way to show gratitude for the life you are living.
Prayer brings peace and assurance—that you are protected, and that everything is unfolding as it should. It brings immense joy.
Every morning, I perform small rituals by offering tea, water, flowers, incense, and light. I chant sutras and offer my deepest gratitude. I feel peaceful and joyful.
10. Practice Gratitude
Being grateful even for the smallest things is a practice in humility. Nothing in life should be taken for granted.
Be thankful for the air you breathe, the water you drink, the sunlight, and your surroundings. Most of us express gratitude only when we’re happy. But when you practice gratitude regularly, you naturally attract more joy, peace, and happiness into your life.
11. Make Your Bed
Start your day with discipline. Arrange your bed as soon as you get up.
I fold my blanket, tidy my bedsheet, open the curtains, and let the fresh air in. It gives me a sense of joy and readiness for a new day.
12. Be with Nature
Be with nature in the morning. Feel the breeze, listen to the birds, feel the warmth of the sun, look at your plants.
I’m lucky to have some open space at home. I feed the birds—they come to peck at the grains, and the sight is beautiful. I look at each plant and talk to it. I feel they’re listening to me with joy.
13. Self-Care
Self-care is self-love in action. If you don’t take care of yourself, who will?
You are your best friend. So treat yourself the way you want your best friend to be treated.

We often stop caring for ourselves when we’re at home. If you’re in that habit — stop.
Wear fresh, beautiful clothes even at home.
You are the queen of your space — so act like one.
I used to wear the same old sweater every winter and faded clothes in summer, for years. Changing those small patterns changed my life.
It doesn’t look like a woman who has given up. Look like the queen you are. Dressing up at home lifts your mood and makes you feel happier.
16. Make Your Hair
Comb your hair and keep it tidy. Go to the salon if it needs a trim. Your hair is your crown — take care of it and make it shine.

Start sipping regularly. It supports your body’s overall health — and good health is the real secret to happiness.
19. Take Care of Your Nails
Trim your nails. Apply nail polish. Moisturise your hands. Your hands do so much every day — they deserve care.
When you see your hands looking clean and beautiful while working, it brings unexpected joy.
It’s a tiny thing that makes a big difference.

You don’t need company to go out — take yourself out. Go for a walk, enjoy each step, and let yourself feel refreshed.

Don’t just take a bath — take a mindful bath every once in a while.
Play calming music, light a candle, use a fragrant shower gel, and give yourself the best experience.
Be mindful with every action — feel the water, enjoy the scent, focus on each step like shampooing and rinsing.
For me, it feels like I’m washing away all the negativity from both inside and outside my body.
After a mindful bath, I feel refreshed, peaceful, and happy.
23. Listen to Music
Play music while doing your household chores. It adds energy and joy to even the most routine tasks.
My daughter gifted me a Bluetooth speaker on my birthday — it has become my best friend! I turn it on whenever I’m doing anything.
Even during my morning puja (prayer ritual), I play devotional songs or chants to set the mood.
Whether I’m cooking, bathing, or gardening, my Bluetooth speaker is always on.
Music makes me feel alive and energetic.

Gardening is my hobby. When I’m with my plants, I lose track of time. It’s deeply healing and peaceful.
My plants have taught me patience, selfless love, and resilience. I treat them like my children — my green babies.
They bring me joy and remind me to keep nurturing, no matter what.

I dance while cooking, cleaning, and even bathing sometimes.
It instantly uplifts my energy and brings so much joy.
