Do you wish for a clean home that is spacious, free of clutter and always tidy?
A clean home reflects a clean state of mind while a cluttered home can make our mind feel anxious and cluttered too.
Our home where we spend our time being our truest selves must make us feel calm, relaxed and happy.
This can only happen when our homes are clean and tidy. But always having a clean home seems almost impossible for many of us.
However, I want to tell you it’s not impossible and it is also not that hard to achieve if you only embrace certain simple habits.
I don’t have little kids in my home, but I do have two cats and one dog who live with me and my daughter.
As like little kids, our pets don’t fail to make our home messy.
My dog and two cats get along well and jump and play around from one room to the other turning things here and there.
I also don’t have anyone for house help and have to maintain a home all by myself, but still, I can say that my home is always clean.
So here in this post, I want to share the simple habits of people with clean homes.
1. They always make their bed
The first habit of women who always have clean homes is that they always make their beds.
I know this is such a simple habit, but I have seen so many women give no care towards making their bed all day and sleep in the same unmade bed day after day.
The habit of making your bed every day might be simple, but it is powerful in also how it makes us feel.
Seeing a clean and tidy bed also clears our mind and makes us start our day on a positive note marking the arrival of a fresh new day.
If you want to have a clean home, first make sure that your bed is always made and it is clean and tidy.

2. They always go to bed with a clean kitchen
The second habit of women who always have clean homes is that they make sure their kitchen is always clean.
For this, they never leave the dirty dishes in the sink overnight and this is a rule they follow.
I usually clean my kitchen and wash the dishes as I cook. By the time my food is cooked, all the dishes that were used while preparing the dish also get cleaned and so is my kitchen.
Not washing the dishes and leaving them overnight might seem like a small thing, but they can extend to other areas of your life as well where we start leaving and growing irresponsible in other areas of our life as well saying, “Tomorrow I will tackle it”
Until the mess starts piling up and we start to feel messy on the inside too.
Our outer environment affects our inner environment and when you keep your home and kitchen clean, you must feel that you are cleaning your life and mind too.

3. They do the laundry regularly
Living in India we didn’t even have washing machines until recently. Only the rich could buy it. We never felt the need for washing machines.
I always washed my clothes and my daughter’s clothes when she was young using my hand. And even earlier in my childhood and teenage years we would go to the forest with our dirty clothes in a basket and wash clothes in the water spring that came naturally.
This we would call, ‘Going to ‘Dhaara’ and this is something all people living in the hills have done and still do.
Having a washing machine to do the laundry has made doing laundry so much easier and I don’t have any problem doing them.
I tackle the laundry regularly and this makes having a clean home so much easier too.
4. They don’t throw clothes after using them
The number one cause for why our rooms get so messy is because of our clothes.
We women whenever we change our clothes, all our clothes come out and the ones we don’t end up wearing, we just toss away thinking we’ll deal with them later.
The clothes that we wear, we toss it out after every use in our chair, table and bed until they pile up everywhere and we are overwhelmed to tackle them.
I have been to some people’s homes who don’t even have a proper place to sit. There are things all over their place. You have to move the clothes from the chair to the bed to sit.
This is never like that with people who always have clean homes.
This is because, after every time they use their clothes, they fold them and keep it back in the cupboard. If not in the cupboard straight away, they still fold it and keep it in its designated place.
I know this might feel too boring at the moment, but it just takes 2 minutes to fold your clothes and keep them properly instead of tossing them away just like that.
Mindfulness has helped a lot in this and mindfully folding clothes after every use has kind of become like a mindfulness practice for me.
5. They have good storage baskets and cupboards
To keep a house neat, tidy and organized, something that most of us ignore is to keep good storage baskets and invest in cupboards.
Everything must have a place and every place must have its thing.
For the things in your household to not be here and there and everywhere, it must have a place of its own.
Keep things of similar nature together and keep them where you use them so that they are not too far from the place they are used.
For example, keep your stationeries together on your study table or desk and not in some other room where you don’t use them.
This keeps things organised.
If something cannot find a place anywhere, buy storage baskets or anything where you can keep them.
People who have clean homes always have their homes clean because they are organised about their belongings.
Keeping things organised does 80% of the job of keeping a house clean and tidy.
6. They plan what they want to clean
Whenever my house gets messy or if I feel many rooms and areas of the household need to be cleaned- like the balcony, garden, sitting room, bedroom, etc, after I have been away from the house a long time from travelling or anything, I always plan my cleaning.
I decide which rooms or areas I want to clean today and what I plan on cleaning the next day.
I go from one room to the next or one area to the next each day.
I don’t plan to clean all together at once, but do it bit by bit every day.
Once the house is clean, it is all about maintaining the house and keeping it tidy each day which doesn’t take much time.
7. They spend some time each day cleaning
People with clean homes always spend sometime in their day cleaning. This can be either in the morning or in the evening before going to bed.
They tackle the mess before it gets too messy and one rule they follow is that- they never go to bed in an unclean room.
Even if the rest of the house is a mess for some reason, they will always clean the room they will sleep in and then, I tackle the rest of the house the next day.
By spending some time cleaning each day, it’s easier to maintain a clean house and there isn’t much effort required.
Every day it is all about giving some time to cleaning and tidying up.
If you do it every day, it doesn’t take much time.
8. Once a week they do deep cleaning of their home
All through the week, it’s all about light cleaning- cleaning the surfaces, cleaning as you go, maintaining your home and keeping it organized.
But once a week, usually on a weekend when they are off from work, they will deep clean their home and clean all the rooms properly.
For me, it’s usually on a Sunday when I clean the entire home properly by first dusting, brooming and then mopping the floors.
This is like a weekly reset for the home and it keeps my home very clean and organised.
All through the week, I only work on maintaining my home this way.
9. They don’t accumulate too much stuff
To have a clean home, you need to have a spacious home.
The people who have clean homes don’t accumulate too much stuff.
They are not hoarders. You will see that they will only have things that are meaningful to them and which are being used.
If you have less stuff, you also have less stuff to clean and maintain.
There is more room to breathe and your mind also feels free and spacious.
If you want to have a clean home, you have to remember to not accumulate too much stuff and always make purchases for the house and yourself mindfully.
10. They declutter regularly
People who have clean homes declutter regularly and give away the stuff they do not need.
If something hasn’t been used for the past 6 months, then chances are you won’t need to use them in future as well.
Give them up.
Without decluttering, we can never have a clean home.
I like to declutter every week or so. If I find anything that I don’t use in the kitchen or anywhere during my deep cleaning session every once a week like papers, cardboard, or plastics, I throw them away.
This keeps the house lighter and easier to maintain too.
11. They put things where they belong the right way
Another rule they follow is that we put things where they belong right away after using them.
They keep the scissors where they were after using them.
They will keep the clothes in the cupboard after using them.
They will keep their books and belongings where they belong right away.
This habit helps them not only keep things organized but also helps them save a lot of time.
If they were to keep on looking for the scissors, or where their books or pens are every time they needed it, then a lot of time would get wasted.
Keeping things where they belong right away, saves time and keeps their house organized and tidy.
12. They keep cleaning essentials close by
Whatever they need to clean such as broom, brushes, mop, cleaning liquid, dusting clothes etc, they will keep those things in their proper place and in the place where they use them.
For example, to clean the surfaces of tables and dust them, I keep a dusting cloth close to the table itself so that I can clean and dust it when I see a mess.
They are all in place and I know exactly where to find my cleaning essentials and this makes me clean easily without feeling bored.
If I were to look for the Colin (cleaning liquid) where my dusting clothes are or where the broom and mop are kept, then I would easily get bored cleaning.
Keeping cleaning essentials close by, helps me keep my house clean.
13. They don’t wear shoes in the house
I don’t know about other cultures, but in Indian households, we never wear outside shoes in the house.
We have a separate indoor slipper and we use that every time we enter the house from outside.
This too keeps our house clean and tidy.
14. They get others involved
Lastly, they get others in the household involved in their deep cleaning sessions.
They ask for the house rules to be maintained and make it clear that things should be where they belong.
It’s easier to have a clean home when the rest of the family also co-operates.
Of course, when you have a kid or pets, you can’t ask them to cooperate, so in this case, you must have designated places for them to play and make a mess in so that the rest of the house doesn’t get messy.
I always close the door of the rooms I don’t want a mess in so that my dog and cats can’t enter.
They’re free to play in the other rooms.
You must also keep their things where they belong right away so that it isn’t all over the house.
