Your home is your sanctuary, a place to rest, enjoy and revive your energy after a tiring day. Is your home a calm home making you feel at ease or does it make you even more anxious and cluttered?
At times my daughter comes home from work with a headache.
Most of the time she gets headaches from the heavy atmosphere of her workplace, she gets a vibe that does not match her thoughts.
So I see that she feels relaxed when she comes back home, and I always make home a welcoming atmosphere.
She always feels happy seeing her home calm and perfect despite having three pets at home.
How much ever you are tired from your day’s work, when you return to your home and you find it relaxing and calm, half of your stress will melt down and you will instantly start feeling good and refreshed.
Our life is one with the environment.
We are interconnected with not just living things, but also non-living things, with the objects and materials that we have in our home and environment.
The things that we have at home impact us as much as the people around us.
The way your home is designed, the art hanging in your bedroom, the colours, the things and the belongings all impact our mood and mental health.
Why create a Calm home
Our home is our world. Our home is a miniature of the world live in.
It doesn’t matter if our home is small or big, or old or new.
If we only care about our home and look after its peace and calmness, then automatically our world, our earth too will become a better place.
If every home is a calm home, then the world will also be a calm world.
Our home is the best place to gain the energy of calmness. You spend most of the time at home so you must make your home a sanctuary of peace.
You need not wait to have a new home, to move out first and live in a new home to create a calm home.
You can make your current home a calm home. This need not be delayed.
You deserve to live in a calm home, a home that supports you peace and wellbeing.
So here in this post I will share how you can make your home a calm home.
Follow these simple tips and make it wonders.
How to Create a Calm Home
1. Make your home noise-free
If you want to make your home a calm place to live, reduce the volume of the noise at home.
Make your home peaceful by not arguing about unnecessary topics with an extra high pitch.
After all, you are living with your family whom you love the most, to whom you take refuge when you are feeling down and low. There is no need to shout when speaking.
Understand their point of view and be flexible in your perception.
Apply the habit of speaking in a soft tone always. It will take some time to bring into practice, but once it is built it’s hard to break.
Here in Kolkata, you get to hear loud noises from early in the morning, starting from different kinds of sellers from flower sellers, vegetable sellers, fish sellers, the continuous whistle of the garbage picker, bells from the nearby temple, the continuous horns and so many noises at all times.
There is already so much noise from outside so why have it inside your home too?
It is all-important to keep yourself calm and peace.
Instead, play soft music and speak softly with your loved ones.
2. Use Calming Home Decor
Bring in some calming home decor.
Change the interiors of the room to make it more relaxing and calming.
It need not always cost money. You don’t have to paint it again.
Here are some Calming Home decor ideas
- You can just add a calming wallpaper.
- Change the lighting and opt for soothing lampshades and warm lights.
- Add happy family photos in the living room that you see first thing when you enter
- Change the position of the bed or furniture.
- Allow more natural light to come in by changing your curtains.
- Get some cosy blankets and pillow covers.
- Buy nice colorful bedsheets.
- You can add a wind chime. With every soothing sound it makes, let it make you aware of your thoughts. Every time the wind chime makes a sound, you can come back to breathing in and breathe out a calming breath.
- You can buy wall art or painting that soothes you and makes you feel welcome.
Whatever you buy for your home, make sure it has a calming and relaxing vibe.
3. Light Candles
Lighting candles give calm vibes to your home and also to your mind. It helps in reducing your stress from a hard day’s work.
Light candles in your room, dining room, or living room.
The soft light of the candles relaxes our minds and brings calmness to our bodies too.
And if we are calm, then naturally our home will become a tranquil place to live in.
4. Reduce the use of screens
Every house should have a rule about using their electronic gadget, especially phones and the television. I have seen people keeping their television on all the time, whether they are watching it or not.
They will be busy either talking or with their mobile but still, keep the television on in the background.
When you are watching television watch it, and enjoy it with your family instead of making it background noise.
This habit will help your home to become a calm place to live in.

5. Create one room as a calm Sanctuary
It is possible to make your entire home a calm home, but when you are beginning, strive to create one room in your house that is always calm and relaxing.
Let this be your sanctuary.
Use this room to meditate, journal, exercise, read or engage in your hobbies.
Let this room be your abode in your abode.
Keep it always clean and tidy. Keep minimal items. Keep the room light and spacious.
Light scented candles. Have a meditation mat and use this room just for this restorative and rejuvenating purpose.
In our two BHK apartment in Kolkata, we have one room which is kind of like our sanctuary. here we have kept plants as in the other rooms our cats will climb and break it.
We keep this room closed and open only when we enter it for praying, meditating and relaxing.
6. Declutter Every Now and Then
Find time to declutter every now and then.
The things which you have not used for more than six months won’t come in use in future.
Give them away. And from next time, only buy meaningful items for your house which you know will be of use.
Stop hoarding and piling things in your house.
These things will only occupy the space of your house and your mind.
The more you free up space, the more space you will have for the good things to come to your life.
Declutter your unused stuff at home with the attitude that you are decluttering the negative things from your life.
It has a very therapeutic effect.

7. Healthy Communication
If you want to make your a calm home, it is not just enough to change the decor, the furniture, declutter and tidy up.
It is also important to have healthy communication with your loved ones at home.
If the atmosphere of the home is not healthy with them, then the vibration at home will always be heavy and negative.
The vibe at home will be suffocating like there are some hidden wires.
We don’t communicate with others only verbally but also with our body language.
You must be aware of your body language too, if you want to make your home a peaceful home.
The body language of other people can really make us upset and frustrated or it can make us happy and cheerful.
Be open with your spouse, children or any other family member staying with you. Clear the misunderstanding if any arise, at the earliest.
Have more laughter in your home. A home that laughs a lot is a home that is healthy and happy.
8. Add Green In Your Home
Having greens at home is a must to have a calming home.
The most easy way to make your home calm is by keeping green plants around.
Green plants not only give oxygen but also add beauty and positive vibes to our homes.
I love spaces where plants are there. Anywhere I put a green plant in, it changes the look of that space and it makes me feel happy.
Any dull corner is instantly brightened. I wonder how plants and nature have such strong positive vibrations that it ends up making us feel calm and positive too.
9. Have an organized routine
You can never have a calm home if you don’t have an organized routine.
If you are always disorganized about your bedtime hours, your dinner and your kitchen, about your kid’s rules, if your bedroom and living room are a mess, you can never have a calm home.
Keep your rooms organized. Have a cleaning schedule. Have a daily simple routine to follow.
Keep things where they belong and let everything have a place.
Organization is a must for a calm home.

10. Offer Prayers
Prayer is the most effective way to calm your body and mind.
If you are calm and peaceful then everything around will be calm and peaceful too.
The universe understands the language of energy.
If you are angry you give negative energy and if you are happy and at peace you give positive energy.
Prayers keep you in a high life state and give you peace, calm and positivity.
When you are in peace, then your vibration helps keep your home calm and peaceful.
Those who enter your home can feel this vibration too, and they too will feel relaxed and at peace.
The moment you enter your home, even if you are disturbed, your home’s vibration will have become so peaceful that it will end up making you feel uplifted.
You can create a home like this.
I offer my prayers first thing in the morning, I chant Buddhist mantras which give me immense joy and calmness and I welcome the day with happiness.
I feel that my house is protected and feel peace of mind all day and I feel my home is engulfed in this peace all day.

You need not delay in this and you need not strive for perfection. Just add small things that will liven up the room.
See them as supporters of your happiness and well-being.
