There is a popular saying, “Money cannot buy happiness.”
Over the years, I have realised that this is only partly true. Money may not buy genuine happiness, especially when we are content with what we have and know how to use money wisely.
But when you have experienced financial struggles, especially as a mother, your perspective can change completely.
As a mother, I have lived through financial scarcity. I know the pain of being unable to fulfil your child’s simple wishes because you simply don’t have enough money.
That feeling stays with you forever.
Today, I believe that money can provide comfort, security, opportunities, and peace of mind.
While it cannot buy genuine love or lasting happiness, it can certainly make life easier.
Sadly, in today’s world, people sometimes treat you differently depending on your financial situation.
When you have money, you may attract more attention from relatives, friends, and society. Without it, you can sometimes feel invisible.
Looking back, I sometimes wonder whether my parents married me soon after I completed Class 12 and had just started my first year of college because they could not afford the financial burden of my higher education.
Now, as a mother, I understand the pain of not being able to fulfil your daughter’s wish to continue her studies.
After marriage, I never had to worry about food or shelter. My in-laws took care of those basic needs. But everything changed when I became a mother.
I could live with my own unfulfilled dreams. I could suppress my desires and adjust to a life of scarcity. But once I became a mother, my priorities changed completely.
Motherhood taught me courage—a courage I never knew existed within me.
The moment you hold your child in your arms, you discover a strength that comes naturally.
I was financially dependent on my in-laws and could not provide the little luxuries my daughter wished for.
I still remember her saying, “Mom never brings anything when she goes out. My friends’ parents always buy them so many things.”
Those words broke my heart because I simply didn’t have extra money to spend.
That pain became my turning point.
When my daughter was just seven years old, I gathered the courage to go abroad and work so that I could earn money and give her a better life.
It was one of the hardest decisions I ever made as a mother, but it changed my life forever.
Motherhood taught me the true value of money. It taught me that financial independence is not about becoming rich—it is about having the ability to care for your family with dignity, confidence, and peace of mind.
Money cannot buy everything, but it can provide education, healthcare, security, opportunities, and the ability to fulfil your child’s dreams.
It can reduce financial stress and give you choices when life becomes difficult.
That is why motherhood taught me that earning, saving, and using money wisely are among the greatest gifts a parent can give their children.
Money may not guarantee happiness, but the lack of it can certainly bring unnecessary pain.
As mothers, we don’t necessarily dream of luxury. We dream of giving our children a better life than the one we had.
In this post, I am sharing my own experiences and the 7 lessons motherhood taught me about money.
Maybe you will relate to some of them and see your own motherhood journey reflected in my story.
I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences in the comments.

1. Motherhood Taught Me the Importance of Financial Security
I wish I had understood this earlier: before planning for a baby, it is important to think about creating a secure financial future for yourself and for your child.
Motherhood brings countless joys, but it also comes with unexpected responsibilities and challenges.
While money cannot buy love or happiness, financial stability can certainly ease many of the struggles mothers face.
Financial security gives you the freedom to make better choices for your child without constantly worrying about how to manage the next expense.
The day I gave birth to my daughter and held her in my arms for the first time, I fell deeply in love with her.
My heart overflowed with love, compassion, and an unconditional desire to protect and care for her.
But along with that overwhelming joy came a quiet sadness.
I knew I could not give her the comfort and opportunities that every mother dreams of providing for her child.
At that time, I was financially dependent on my in-laws, and that dependence made me feel helpless.
Like every mother, I wanted to give my daughter the very best—to see her happy, comfortable, and never deprived of anything she needed.
That experience made me realise how important financial independence is for a mother.
Motherhood taught me that love is the greatest gift we can give our children, but financial security allows us to nurture that love with confidence, dignity, and peace of mind.
If you are planning to become a mother, prepare your heart for motherhood, but also prepare your finances.
Your future self and your child will thank you for it.
2. Motherhood Taught Me to Be Courageous
Motherhood taught me that courage often comes from love.
I was a helpless mother who could not afford to give my daughter the little luxuries I wished for her.
I never took her on outings or bought her fancy toys. Yet God blessed me with a daughter who was never demanding and always accepted what we had with a smile.
Like every mother, I wanted to pamper her and give her the best childhood possible, but my financial situation did not allow me to do so.
One day, I gathered the courage to ask my in-laws for permission to go abroad for work. It took a lot of convincing, but eventually, they agreed.
Leaving my little daughter behind was the hardest decision I had ever made.
Every day away from her was filled with longing and guilt. But I knew I was making that sacrifice for her future.
Working far from my child was not easy, yet motherhood gave me the strength to do what I once thought was impossible.
The income I earned gradually improved our lives and taught me one of the greatest lessons of motherhood: sometimes, true courage means making painful sacrifices today to build a better tomorrow for your child.
3. Motherhood Taught Me the Value of Earning My Own Money
Motherhood taught me that earning my own money is one of the greatest gifts I could give to myself and my child.
There is a unique joy in spending your own hard-earned money on your child.
It is not just about buying things, it is about the confidence, satisfaction, and strength that financial independence brings.
When you earn your own money, you gain the freedom to make decisions for yourself and your child.
Your opinions are heard, your choices are respected, and you feel more confident in handling life’s responsibilities.
Although my income was modest, it allowed me to send my daughter to private tuition classes and give her small joys by buying things she needed.
Those little moments meant everything to me because they came from my own earnings.
My first job abroad gave me the courage to believe in myself. It inspired me to continue working even after I returned home.
That experience changed my mindset forever and showed me the true power of financial independence.
Motherhood taught me that one of the greatest values of earning your own money is the independence and confidence it brings.
When you are financially independent, you can make your own decisions, handle unexpected situations, and feel more secure about your future.
4. Motherhood Taught Me the Importance of Teaching Children About Money

One of the greatest lessons motherhood taught me is the importance of teaching children about money from a young age.
Money is more than just a means to buy things. It can provide confidence, independence, and the freedom to pursue your dreams and aspirations.
I was raised in a modest family and spent much of my life living with financial scarcity. I had to suppress many of my own dreams and desires because I simply could not afford them.
There were so many things I wished I could do—not only for myself but also for my daughter.
I also received very little financial support, which made the journey even more challenging.
I know what it feels like to set aside your dreams because of a lack of money.
I know the helplessness that comes when your heart wants to do something, but your financial situation holds you back.
That is why I made it a point to teach my daughter to respect money and use it wisely.
At the same time, I wanted her to understand that money should never make us selfish. I taught her to help people in need whenever possible.
I believe that if the money in my bank account can help someone fulfil a dream, ease their struggles, or bring hope into their life, then it has found its true purpose.
Wealth becomes truly meaningful when it is used with kindness and compassion.
5. Motherhood Taught Me to Save Money
One of the greatest money lessons motherhood has taught me is the importance of saving money.
Life is unpredictable, and unexpected situations can arise at any time.
Building a financial cushion is one of the wisest things a mother can do for herself and her family.
During difficult times, you may realize that very few people are able to offer financial help. But if you have savings, you won’t have to depend on others or ask for assistance.
Financial preparedness gives you confidence, security, and peace of mind.
I have experienced this firsthand.
I have always been willing to help others whenever I could, but when I needed help, I found that very few people were there.
That experience taught me a valuable lesson.
No matter how small your income is, make it a habit to save a little every month.
Over time, those small savings can become a lifeline during emergencies.
Looking back on my motherhood journey, I can confidently say that learning to save money has been one of the most valuable financial lessons of my life.

6. Motherhood Taught Me to Invest in Myself

One of the greatest financial and personal lessons motherhood taught me is the importance of investing in myself.
It took me a long time to realize that my life is just as important as everyone else’s.
For years, I lived mainly for others. Then one day, I decided to change my perspective and make time for myself.
As mothers, our primary focus is often on creating a happy, comfortable, and secure life for our families.
But motherhood taught me that when I fill my own life with positivity, knowledge, healthy habits, and purpose, I naturally pass those qualities on to my child.
Children don’t just listen to what we say. They also learn from how we live.
I started investing in my health by joining online yoga classes because I wanted to stay healthy and strong for my child.
I also created a morning routine that included reading, journaling, practicing yoga, writing for my blog, and taking care of my garden.
Over time, these small investments transformed my life.
Today, I earn an income through my blog, and I have also turned part of my home into a successful Airbnb business.
One feature my guests appreciate the most is the beautiful garden in front of my home—a space I lovingly nurtured over the years.
Motherhood taught me that investing in yourself is never selfish.
It is one of the greatest investments you can make for your future and your family.
When you continue learning, take care of yourself, and work toward financial independence, you create a stronger and more fulfilling life for yourself and your loved ones.
7. Motherhood Taught Me There Is No Age Limit to Earn Money
The last and perhaps most important lesson motherhood taught me about money is that there is no age limit to earning money or achieving financial independence.
My life was once filled with hardships and financial scarcity.
When my daughter was growing up and studying, I often struggled financially.
Today, I am grateful to experience a greater sense of financial freedom.
I started writing my blog quite late, in my 50s.
I also started my Airbnb business recently, and it is doing well.
These experiences have taught me that it is never too late to start something new, learn a skill, or create an additional source of income.
If you are determined, focused, and willing to work for your dreams, age is just a number.
You can start earning, build financial independence, and create a better life for yourself at any age.
It is never too late to believe in yourself, take the first step, and turn your dreams into reality.

Final Thoughts on 7 Lessons Motherhood Taught Me About Money
When I look back at my journey, I realise that some of my most difficult experiences became some of my greatest teachers.
And the years have taught me that it is never too late to create a better financial future.
I no longer believe that financial success is simply about having more money.
To me, financial independence means having choices. It means being able to care for your family, handle unexpected situations, invest in your dreams, help others, and live with greater confidence and peace of mind.
If you are a mother struggling financially today, I want you to know that your current circumstances do not have to define your future.
And most importantly, never believe that you are too old or that it is too late.
Your financial journey can begin at any stage of life.
Motherhood changed the way I looked at money. What once represented scarcity and helplessness gradually became a symbol of independence, opportunity, and hope.
Perhaps that is the greatest money lesson motherhood taught me: we may not be able to give our children everything, but when we become financially stronger, we can give them something priceless—the opportunity to dream without fear.
