Being a stay at home mom can be rewarding, but at the same time boring and frustrating if you don’t know how to spend time properly.
After my daughter got her job, we shifted to a new place. I resigned my job as a teacher and went to accompany her. I thought of starting a job there but the pandemic changed our lives.
With lockdown all over the country, we came back to our home again. With a grown up daughter who has her own work to do, it was so difficult to pass my time.
I was feeling frustrated and bored. I had plenty of time after finishing my usual house hold chores, and I wanted to use my extra time in some productive and meaningful activity.
And that I did. So here in my post I want to share some tips on meaningful things you can do as stay at home mom.
I hope they will help you to keep you engage.
Meaningful things to do as a stay at home mom
Start gardening
If you are at home and want to do something to pass your time then gardening is the best option. You can grow your plants whether you are staying in an apartment or have your own land.
You don’t need to have a big garden or a big balcony to start gardening. Just start by taking care of one plant.
For me, we have a small garden, but I never got time to look after them when I was working. Even though I really wanted to take care of them, I only used to water them to keep them alive.
But after being a stay at home mom, I found my passion just in front of me.
If you decide to start gardening, but don’t know where to start, here are the only 5 ingredients you need to know as a beginner.
- Select the plant which is very easy to maintain and hard to die. There are plenty of such beautiful plants. You can go for Aloevera, money plant, snake plant, peace lily, bamboo plant, syngonium and many more.
- Use regular garden soil that is available in your area. As you progress in gardening you can use other manure which are available online and nursery.
- Do not over water. This is very common fault we make as a beginner to help plants grow faster, but instead make our plants die because of excess water.
- Make sure your plant is getting sunlight. We all have studied in school that plants make their food in the presence of sunlight, water and carbon dioxide.
- Lastly the most important ingredients I found is love. Give Love to your plants as you water them, and you can actually feel uplifted and feel as if your plants are smiling and appreciating you.
If you start gardening, know that you are not just passing your time as a gardener as your new hobby, but actually contributing to the environment by giving fresh and clean air which all of us are in need of at this hour of increasing pollution and climate change.

Reading a good book not only passes your time but it gives us immense knowledge and wisdom. You will learn to navigate your life in a better way.
For stay at home mom like us it is a gift to us that help us make correct decisions in life.
After making a regular habit of reading I have realised I have cultivated three strong characters in me of courage, compassion and clarity.
If you are not a book person even then you can be a regular reader. I too have cultivated this habit recently as a stay at home mom.
- Make a list of books you want to read this year.
- Read in the morning with your tea or coffee instead of looking at the phone.
- Keep your book near you which you can easily reach to your hand.
- Start with 5 minutes or 2-3 pages every day.
- Do not give up reading for at least for 21 days. 21 days is the right amount of days to form any kind of habit.
- Choose thin book at the beginning.
- Choose a book with big font to see clearly.
- Keep your next book ready.
3. Start writing a journal
Making a journal writing habit is important for everyone but I think for stay at home mom like us it is more important.
If you don’t know what to write in a journal, here are things you can write:
- Jot down your feelings in it
- Your day’s happening
- New things you have learned
- New habits you have formed or habits you are working on
- Write down quotes from the book you are reading
Basically, there are endless things you can write about.
And now it is actually Journaling that lead me to start writing a blog too.
4. Start Learning Cooking:
Most of us woman already know how to cook. As a stay at home from India, I cook at home thrice a day and I don’t find it difficult at all.
Homemade food is good for health and at the same time you can save money.
If you do not know cooking then start learning for yourself and for your family. It is fun and gives you satisfaction after feeding your kids and spouse.
Even if you already know how to cook, learn some more similar dishes or new dishes from internet in your free time and serve them with love to your family. This is the best thing to do for stay at home mom.
5. Start Learning Yoga
Time spent towards personal wellbeing is the best thing you can do as a stay at home mom.
We tend to spend most of our time by scrolling our phone. Whenever we are free we just jump from one app to another. One moment we are with our facebook family, and next time with Instagram, and then at another moment watching youtube videos.
We are always flicking our mind from here to there and at the end of the day we feel more stress and complain of headache.
However creating time for personal growth especially as a stay at home mom must be taken seriously.
Learn yoga from Youtube or down load a Yoga app. Start with light exercises.
If you really want to progress in life then you must cultivate good habits. You must learn to be in the rhythm of the universe.
Final thoughts on things to do as a stay at home mom
We women are the sun of our family. When we are bright and warm, everything around will be in its best form.
The clouds may come and block our way, but we will always shine back.
When you are staying at home, it means that you are more worthy to illuminate any darkness from any corner. You have plenty of time to shine more brightly, so just give time for yourself.
There are still so many things you can do as a stay at home mom like starting a blog, starting a youtube channel, making a DIY for something, knitting, sewing, organizing, etc.
Just look around. there are plenty of things we can do and we are good at.Your feelings of idleness are giving you an opportunity to start something.
Do not ignore it rather take this feeling of idleness in a positive way. Be thankful that you are aware that you are feeling idle and immediately work on it.
