The habits we practice regularly shape our lives. It’s important to adopt good habits in order to lead a happy and peaceful life.
When you’re on a self-development journey, developing positive habits in your daily routine is a great starting point. But at the same time, it’s equally important to identify what habits to avoid, especially in the morning.
The more you focus on avoiding negative habits, the more space you create for positive changes. The morning is a crucial part of this process.
How you start your morning often determines the tone for the rest of the day. If you wake up with a negative attitude, it’s unlikely that your life will change in a meaningful way.
Morning rituals are the foundation of your life shift. So, cultivate the habit of avoiding negative behaviors. Once negative habits are removed, good habits naturally take their place.
I’ve personally struggled with my morning routine for several months, as my responsibilities at home have increased. As a single mom, my daughter works outside the home, and I am alone most of the time. This year, we also began renovating our dream house, which has kept me busy with construction work.
However, I am satisfied that I haven’t completely neglected my morning rituals, even though I missed writing my blog posts, pinning on Pinterest, and exercising. I’ve stayed committed to my routine in other ways.
This is all because I have learnt to avoid certain habits in the morning.
Today, I want to share 8 habits you should avoid in the morning in order to start your day on a positive and productive note.

1. Avoid Pressing the Snooze Button
When you make the decision to change your life and adopt good habits, waking up early is often the first habit you choose to tackle.
You set your alarm, but when it rings, you feel annoyed and press the snooze button. You tell yourself, “I’ll sleep early tonight and start my morning routine tomorrow.”
Everyone does this. But if you want to be extraordinary, stop making excuses. Get up and get started.
Avoid pressing the snooze button. If you don’t conquer this habit today, you’ll struggle with it tomorrow. This is one of the most important challenges to overcome when you commit to changing your life.
It may seem hard at first, but it’s not. You can change your mindset. After a few days, you’ll find yourself waking up even before your alarm goes off.
Avoid Checking Your Phone Immediately After Waking Up
Stop checking your phone as soon as you wake up. The morning is a fresh new day, and it’s best to feed your mind with your own positive thoughts.
Your morning mind absorbs everything more efficiently. Feed it with creativity, good thoughts, and healthy habits.
As your day progresses, external noise and distractions will inevitably arise, so don’t let your phone distract you first thing in the morning. Checking your phone in the early hours means you’re feeding your mind with others’ thoughts, not your own.
Keep your phone out of reach during the first hour of your morning to avoid distractions.
Avoid Spending Time in Bed
Avoid lingering in bed after you wake up. Instead, make your bed immediately.
This simple habit gives you a sense of accomplishment and order right from the start of your day.
Many people waste time in bed either scrolling through their phone, watching the news, or getting lost in random videos. Starting your day with negative news or unnecessary distractions can significantly affect your mental health and hinder your personal growth.
These habits can leave you feeling sluggish and lazy. It’s best to avoid them.
Avoid Skipping Breakfast
Make it a habit to have breakfast before leaving your house for work or school.
Don’t grab a quick bite on the go, as eating in a rush can cause indigestion. Often, good meals aren’t available at work or school, so it’s essential to ensure you leave home with a full stomach.
Skipping breakfast can lead to various stomach issues, so make it a priority not to skip it.
Avoid Procrastination
Procrastinating on important tasks can lead to feelings of hopelessness and decreased productivity. Avoid putting off your key tasks.
Always tackle your most important task first thing in the morning. Completing it early gives you a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. You never know what the rest of your day will bring, so prioritize what matters most in the morning.
Before, I used to write my blog posts after completing my morning rituals, like offering prayers, reading, writing, meditation, and exercising. But I often got distracted by household chores or other people’s needs.
Lately, I’ve made writing my first priority after offering gratitude and reading my affirmations. I’ve found that my thoughts are fresher and more original in the morning.
Avoid Negative Self-Talk
Avoid negative self-talk in the morning. Instead, read morning affirmations. You can either create your own affirmations or find them online or on YouTube.
This practice will uplift your energy and spirit. Negative self-talk can affect your mood and growth, so be kind to yourself.
Everyone is unique and has inherent goodness inside. Embrace that by being gentle with yourself. The more negative you are toward yourself, the further away you move from your true self.
Avoid Gossiping
It’s natural to engage in gossip when you have some free time, but it’s a harmful habit that can waste precious time and distract you from your goals. Gossiping lowers your sense of control and purpose in life.
Avoid engaging with people who gossip. If you’re in a group, either stay quiet or walk away.
The morning is for focusing on your rituals, cultivating peace, and working on self-development. This will help you carry positive energy throughout the day and, eventually, your life.
Avoid Rushing in the Morning
Mornings should be peaceful and calm. The sun is rising, the birds are singing, and flowers are blooming. Nature does its job without rushing, and we are a part of that nature.
Don’t rush through your morning chores, as it will only lead to stress and unhappiness. Instead, do everything mindfully and without hurry.

Final Thoughts
We often think that following a routine is difficult, and the thought of it terrifies us before we even begin. But the truth is, it’s our thoughts that hold us back. The good news is that thoughts can be changed.
By avoiding negative habits in the morning, you create space for positive ones, and this brings hope and joy into your life. The more you avoid negative behaviors in the morning, the more natural good habits will form.
Avoiding negativity in the morning will leave you with a sense of accomplishment, positivity, and satisfaction by the end of your day.
